Sometimes you need to talk to patients to educate them.  Other times you need to talk to them to provide reassurance and comfort.  Still other times you may need to talk to patients just because they need someone to talk to because they are experiencing the feeling of isolation that can come with a medical setting.

You need to listen to patients too.  They may not have your medical knowledge but their questions deserve answers, their concerns should be addressed, and their offhand comments could help direct their treatment.  Great nurses realize that you are taking care of a whole patient, not just a health problem.

Great nurses learn to handle stress.  They don’t just survive the stress but work to find ways to feel less stress when doing their jobs.  They learn ways to unwind so that they do not carry the stress of their work into their personal life and then back to the job again.
